SOAS aspires to continually improving its environmental performance through the implementation of the following
* Assess and regularly reassess via monthly meeetings, CPD’s and bi-annual audit, the environmental effects of the organisation’s activities
* Awareness of and compliance with current legislation
* Training of employees in environmental issues
* Continued study and research of advances in the realm of sustainable materials, construction techniques and energy generation.
* Minimise the production of waste
* Minimise material wastage
* Minimise energy wastage
* Promote the use of recycled, recyclable and renewable materials
* Where possible and appropriate take steps to mitigate climate change
* Reduce and/or limit the production of pollutants to water, land and air
* Control noise emissions from operations
* Minimise the risk to the general public and employees from operations and activities undertaken by the organisation
ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN PROJECTS
* Improving the quality of the indoor environment by selecting breathable and non toxic materials
* Passive solar design employed to provide heat gain in the cooler months and solar shading in the warmer months thus reduces energy consumption
* The use of building energy use and generation simulations to better inform the energy strategy
* Carefully specify sophisticated mechanical equipment and control systems for thermal comfort and efficient energy use
* Selecting LED and CF lighting reduce lighting energy use by approx. 90%
* Where appropriate specify green/brown roof helps with water retention, reducing the heat island effect and promotes biodiversity
* Collecting rainwater from the roof to reduce the water usage of the building
* Promote the use of renewable energy generation devices
